I have a 5 year old BX2200. 2 years ago I had a problem with it losing power after 10 minutes of use....I notice that it happened when the temp gauge was near red...so I looked at the rad. and sure enough it was clogged up with grass...blew it out and it worked great. Well yesterday the same problem occured again, but the rad. is clean.
The enging sputters and spats.....white smoke occasionally.
The problems seems to happen when I am going up hill?
I also notice my gas gauge seems to go from F to E and all over the place?
Any Ideas?

I'm assuming you also checked the air filter to determine if it is clean. You may want to check your fuel filter. It could be restricting fuel flow. Could you have sediment in your tank that moves when doing hills causing a restriction of flow? ....

There are two fuel filters on the bx2200. Sounds like you have a lot of hours on yours if the radiator was plugged up. Don't like hearing the guage was near the red - this could be a problem of it overheating and doing some engine damage. I'd replace both fuel filters. They are the exact same filter. They are actually small junk little lawn mower filters and should be changed often with the lousey fuel that's out there these days. Mine ran like heck and a changed mine and it straightened it right out. I change mine every 100 hours. ....

I have a very similar issue, that after 20 minutes or so my BX2200 begins to run very rough and belches smoke (black mostly). The temp guage does not show that it is over heated. I also keep the radator clean and debris free. The local dealer can't find anything wrong. If I let it cool down for about 45-60 mins, it will run fine for -20 minutes. ....

I'm not a mechanic nor all that full of knowledge on diesels. I may be full of something else. Was always told on gas engines, "white" in a tailpipe is either running too lean or anti-freeze is leaking into the combustion chamber.
Concurrently with this post, another is running with a similar problem on a Ford 8N. Shortmagnum had suggested popping the filler cap to vent it since that is gravity fed. My original thoughts were a plugged fuel filter. Possibly the fuel pump is bad.
I always hope for the least bad thing happening! ....

After a few years of mechanics ,( not always diesel ) I have seen crazy things happen with excess heat ,,, cracks appear in a variety of places , Between the valves as suggested , is usually a normal location ,But I have seen them in the Exhaust bowl as well ,The coolant wont appear in the oil or combustion chamber , but is just blown out with the exhaust , creating a haze or white in the exhaust smoke, best to do a radiator pressure test , Cold motor (test), then let motor warm a couple minutes ,,, With pressure relieved at radiator so as Not to have to relieve coolant pressure, Retest to see if heat has opened crack. It can take a few minutes to see if pressure holds. It should maintain. ....

I know nothing about diesel engines but I do know a gasser will lose power (sputter some too...) during acceleration up a hill, etc., if the timing is off.
Drive a car on a level road that slopes upward and if the timing is off it will lose power and slow down to the extent that it needs adjustment.
I'm pretty sure diesels have a timing adjustment.
